HP ML110 G6 memory upgrade

Our Training division has a 6 year old HP ML110 -G6 Sever used as the Vmware ESXi host . Back in the time of ESXi 4.0 and 4.1 , the 2 GB RAM on the system was more than enough  to run the lab sessions . But with VMware ESXi 5.5 and all the new workload , the server lost its charm and we used it mostly for running small workloads .

We recently planned to upgrade the system to a higher memory configuration and found it really difficult to get the HP spare for the memory upgrade . The 4 GB ECC RAM  pieces with HP logo on it cost more than 5000  Indian rupees .  We done a little research from our end  and gone for the  aftermarket product . Sharing the details of the same so that it will be beneficial for someone who is looking forward to upgrade their system to higher memory configuration   .

We used ZION 4GB modules DDR3 PC1600 ECC RAM which is readily available in indian market for less than 3,000 INR .  That means at the cost of 2 GB ECC RAM from HP we are getting 4 GB RAM .

We purchased 2 modules and upgraded the system to a total capacity of 8 GB . We did not tried to mix it with 2 GB module as it may affect the overall performance of the system .

After upgradation we done a through testing of the system and it is performing nice on heavy virtual machine workloads . Now it is running ESXi 6.5 hypervisor .

Hope it helps someone who is in the similer situation . If you wish to know more about the data center virtualization training session offered , please visit this link  http://vmwaretraining.in

IN3T4GEZBIX is 4GB modules, have you bought 2 x 4GB additional Memory modules or single 8GB module?

While you may have identical part numbers, many times those memory lots can be sourced from different manufacturers.

You should see the DDR3 Memory Configuration Tool for more configuration options.

As we want to upgrade to 16Gb, we’ve just bought exactly the same RAM as is already installed however when we insert the new modules, the server complains on start-up that there is an error with the memory in the DIMM slots and still only reports 8Gb.

Let's keep in touch
